Justin Lim (b.1990, Singapore) is a visual artist. His interest lies in the notion of displacement and transition between spaces and territories that separate ideas of origins.
His current practice stems partly from the perceptual and subtly evolves beyond process and creation. At the heart of his current body of work is an experiment with materials: polyester finely layered by traces of oil paints and chemically altered substances over synthetic polymer coated stretcher bars. He seeks to investigate the intrinsic relationship a painting has to space as it evokes numerous transformative possibilities.
The play between multiple facets of the painting includes the architecture and surface of the paintings transitory state. The elusive quality of textures and forms not only act as layers and gestures, but a seemingly displaced sense of tension against the skeleton of the frame itself - resulting in a liminal state.
Lim has participated in exhibitions such as Art Stage Singapore, “MULTI: +Project” Kyoto, “An American in Singapore 1965-70 part II” Washington D.C and “certain place(s), vague shades” Wuhan. Solo exhibitions includes “Beyond Bittersweet” and “The Drift Project II” Singapore. He was also a recipient of the inaugural IMPART Award and the Winston Oh Travelogue (research).
